Home Sweet Home

Sometimes when life grabs you by the hand and swirls you around in circles you tend to loose track of time. It can throw things at you that you just don’t expect and either you have to grab it and go with it or you can drop it and loose your focus and growth. I cannot believe that it has been 7 months since I have blogged! Heck, missing a day feels like an eternity in the blog world, so you can imagine how not blogging for 7 months can feel. It feels like it was just yesterday that I announced the birth of our baby boy in May of last year and now I can happily say that we have moved into our first home! Yipee! The picture above is of the winter snow on our street. (Sidenote: while snow is quite beautiful and majestic to look at as it falls it is a pain in the “patooty” to shovel. Being from the south we were totally dumbfounded.)

The move caught us by surprise, we were not planning to move into a home until a year from now, but the stars aligned in a different way and we moved into our little abode last September. It’s your run of the mill cookie cutter house in a cookie cutter neighborhood but we are working diligently to make it unique! In fact I just got a wall put up to enclose the sitting room which is now my craft studio. Long gone are the days of sharing my creative space with living and dining rooms! It really does feel great and I cannot wait to get everything organized and decorated and to take pics to share with you all. I have so many ideas and we are still on a budget so I must tap in to some creative decor remedies!

Anyhow, I cannot begin to tell you how amazing you all are. Many of you chimed in to check on me and stopped by to comment on many of my previous posts. You sure know how to make a girl feel special. I wanted to blog many of nights, yet having a 7 year old who we home-school, a 1 year old, and a new born was just daunting to my creative energy. By the end of the day I just wanted to zone out, and when I did try to blog I just found myself staring at the computer screen at 1am or so feeling so disappointed that I once again did not fulfill any creative endeavors. So, to make a long story short… I’m back, and I am beyond ready to post some creative inspiration for both you and I to enjoy!

Ok, I will be back shortly with lots of loveliness. Hoping you all have a fabulous, emotionally sunny, and creative weekend!

Then Comes Baby

Oh, hello there..remember me? I’m the gal who blogs about pretty things and amazing people on this here blog; and as of lately I seemed to have been sporadically popping in and out in the midst of popping out babies…lol.

So, I cannot believe that it has already been a year since I blogged about having baby girl HERE. One year later and we have a serene baby boy to add to our collection of bundles of joy! As you can see, I decided to take some time off as I try to get acclimated to having 3 little ones to tend to. Thankfully baby girl is sleeping through the night now. That was my biggest fear with having babies one year apart, I pictured myself in distress trying to console two babies at different hours of the night! Our oldest who is six is my amazing assistant! He does everything from changing diapers to taking baby girl to “school”(long story, but to sum it up, he makes her watch sesame street on demand for 30 minutes).

Baby girls birthday was May 17th and I had baby boy on May 14th, so needless to say, I was not prepared nor in the mood to do any sort of birthday celebrating for her 3 days after pushing out a baby. However, I was determined to make her a cake the following weekend! I had it all sketched out in colored pencils weeks before. The picture below is the result. This was my first time making marshmallow fondant. It was so much fun, it was like making and shaping colorful, edible play-dough. It was originally supposed to be a pastel pink and moss green, but I was so tired that I just put a big blob of color onto the fondant, so I ended up with more of a magenta/fuschia and lime green color. The flavor of the cake was chocolate and white chocolate and I had some old jars that I filled with pink lemonade and I used felt rectangles as “placemats”! Considering I was beyond tired when putting this together(esp. the cake) I think it came out pretty good! I’m looking forward to making more fondant covered cakes! Below the photo is the recipe-video that I followed to make my fondant. I did a lot of research and this was the quickest and least messiest; and tasted great (although I prefer not to eat the fondant, too much sugar. I like it solely for decorative purposes)!

So, I say all this to say that I am back and I look forward to sharing more wonderful things with you all! Thank you all so much for your patience with me. You know what they say…life is like a box a chocolates…

Okay, be back with more posts soon!

Halima

Well hello everyone! Whew! I am finally back and boy does it feel good to not have to carry a jumbo belly around anymore! Don’t get me me wrong, I thoroughly enjoyed nurturing the growth of our baby girl, but there is nothing like being able to bend over and reach your toes..or better yet..to see your toes..lol. Anyhow, we welcomed “Halima Ava Marie Taylor” into this world on the morning of May 17th! I was in labor for only 6 hours and we are enjoying each and every minute of her new baby smell and delicate cries (and the laughter we all share as we compare her to Maggie off the Simpsons, as she simply loves her pacifier) She loves to sleep through the night(at least for now), so outside of nursing around the clock, not that much has changed within my schedule. I guess I was thinking that I was going to be “shell shocked” and would have to re-configure everything that I had originally set in place, but that does not seem to be the case!

Thanks to everyone who kept visiting my little creative abode here at JuBella, and many thanks to all of you who sent an e-mail over checking in on me…I feel so special! Ok, so I am stoked to be back and you all can look forward to some creative and inspiring posts and some fun giveaways!

Hello {a little update}

Tuesday, May 12th, 2009

hello

Hi everybody! First I want to thank you all who have sent comments and e-mails asking how I am doing! I feel so special! Well, to answer your question, I am doing good. My actual due date is Sunday and boy am I hoping that she comes on her own by then. If not I will have to schedule a time to be induced next week..so wish me luck! Nevertheless, to keep my mind off of being super uncomfortable and extremely anxious I have been doing lots of things around the house to prepare physically and mentally, as well as some new projects/ideas.

New Blogs: In case you have not noticed I have started a few more blogs..why you ask? Because my mind wanders from subject to subject and I must say that I carry quite an eclectic basket of styles, so having multiple blogs actually helps me organize my thoughts. So when I am not here you can find me at the following blogs as well:

Crafty Hues, Inspiring Mama, and Style Gypsy. I am excited about the Crafty Hues blog because it has given me that boost of extra energy that I will need if I want to gain talent in my textile design & start selling small yardage and gifts using my designs. So feel free to check me out from time to time as I will be posting textile designer interviews in the near future! Inspiring mama will be highlighting more moms and I will continue posting my 14 day menus as much as I can and Style Gypsy will be that blog of inspiration for getting back into shape after baby is out and about:)

hello

So, that’s a bit of an update for you. I do have some posts that will pop up from time to time and again, once baby comes, I am sure I will be able to focus more than worrying. Ok, coming up is a little post I did on Creating the ambiance for your overnight guests! Enjoy!

Happy Monday {thrifty finds}

Monday, January 19th, 2009

ok, so I know that it is about one in the afternoon here on the east coast, but i wanted to take a moment to wish everybody a happy Monday! I cannot remember if I shared the news with you guys here, but we found out that we will be having a little girl! YAY! We are way too excited! Nevertheless things are going well as i try to organize my time and energy. I went to the thrift store briefly yesterday and picked up some fantastic CorningWaretea cups for only 50 cents and the cutest bundt cake pan for 1.10! Score! I fell in love with the color of the cake pan and just had to have it! I want to say that the bundt cake pan is of Nordic Ware Festival Cone pan, but it very well could be a knock off..can anyone tell? Nevertheless I am pleased with my purchase and can’t wait to bake a cake in it..I think I will go for chocolate dusted with powdered sugar! I am all into bundt cake shapes now and I have my eyes set on this one

Ok, that’s all for now, I just wanted to check in to see how you all were doing and to share my new found treasures!

JuBella At Home

About 5 years ago we moved to a very tiny little apartment, and at the beginning, I made my creative self quite distanced from the idea of making it feel like home. It felt temporary to me and filled with accents and fixtures that drive me crazy to this day! So I went through my days surrounded by white walls, bland decor, and zero personality, until one day my husband said something along the lines of this: “you should always appreciate what you have while you have it, and make wherever you are feel like home”. Now I know this should have been common sense, but like I said, I just didn’t want to put any creative energy into such a small and standard apartment that was not even mine. But after he said that a little light bulb went off in my head. I told myself: “I’m an artist, so why not make my home reflect that”. So from there it began. I insisted that although I wanted our apartment to feel creative, I was NOT going to spend very much money. So our entire apartment is decorated and embellished with thrifty finds, handmade goodness, and even some freebies from my very thrifty dad!

I see a lot of decor blogs talk about decorating on a budget, but I wanted to take this moment to talk about that. I have a pet peeve sometimes when I see a headline “Decorating On A Budget” only to read further and find pieces that are $100 and even sometimes in the thousands. Now it is quite obvious that I love decor/design and the chic pricey pieces make my heart melt, but I am on a serious budget and spending even $100 or over for one piece of decor for my home is out of the question. So, what to do, I hit up all of my local thrift stores and made a few things myself. I think it’s important to highlight homes such as mine, that is not necessarily chic and classy, we don’t have hardwood floors and grand ceilings, or ikea pieces, but I find joy in recreating a purpose for something that someone no longer had a use for, or seeing something in a magazine and then making it myself for half the cost. Decorating your home is not about trendy pieces, and designer names, but about the warmth and creative passion that you are willing to put into it. One of the most biggest transformations to your home can happen just with a can of paint! So, in honor of this post, I ask that all of you who may feel a little uneasy about decorating or feel that you have to have the pieces and decor you see in the design magazines, to rethink your mission and squeeze your creative juices because a home is not defined by how much it costs, but how much love you care to put into it. And with that said, i welcome you all into our little abode. Please forgive any unbalanced lighting and over saturation, as I am no Interior Photographer, which is why I love highlighting them so much here on JuBella, because they really do capture the essence of of a home so beautifully! It’s nothing fancy, quite shabby/chic/bohemian. But it’s ours and I love it! Enjoy your visit!

My “Studio” Space: This is where I paint, sketch, and sew for the most part. I bought the luggage from goodwill for $3-8 each. I use them as storage for my art supplies. it works great at keeping little fingers out of your things as well! The frames were given to me by my dad(note: my dad is a serious thrift junky..I think this is where I get it from). I originally planned to buy art for the frames, and I hung them up as placeholders and decided I liked them much better empty:) my sewing machine is an old Elna that my hubby bought for me about 8 years ago and my fabric samples are my treasures that inspire my colors and creativity..I just don’t have the heart to cut them! I like to collect old album covers and I loved the composition and colors in this Dian Ross cover. the lamp($2.99) use to be a pea green until I painted it white, and until I make the lampshade that is in my head(I want a sheer layered/ruffled look), it will stay shadeless.

Reflection Space: This is where I do my journaling and sometimes reading. It’s actually our little ones old baby crib that I painted with a white washed/weathered effect. I made the pillows, the floral sheet came from the thrift store($3.99) and the little basket holds address and birthdays of all of my special friends. i keep it stocked with envelopes, paper, and stamps, to make letter writing easier and often! My favorite thing in this space is my “Dream” card which I purchased from “Made By Girl”.

Dining: Our dining table use to be quite goddy(ahem some may say it still is), it was silver & gold with gray seating. It was hidious. Yet again, my dad found it at some yard sale and asked me if i wanted it, so I said yes, and then I saw it and was like “what am i supposed to do with this!”. So, when all else fails you break out the decopauge. Yep, the entire thing is decopauged with magazine paper. I call it my Anthropologie table because I used so many of their old catalogs. Some may call it kitschy/tacky, but I think it’s lots of fun!

Can’t afford It? Make It! I just finished this pillow Sunday. It was inpsired by a pillow I saw at Urban Outfitters(which I was not going to pay $40 for). I bought an old round pillow for $2 at the salvation army and covered it with scraps of fabric I had laying around.

Outdoors: Our patio is VERY small. but there is enough room to have some tomatoes, basil, aloe vera, bellpeppers, and a small lavender plant. The wooden chairs I got from non other than the thrift store for $5 each. I plan on painting them but not sure what color yet. No, the ducks are not ours, but they roam around our community all lined up in a row. They are super cute!

The Kitchen: Our kitchen is quite simple, with a touch of fun. I painted the laundry room door with chalkboard paint and covered our terribly old fridge with food clippings. I love using glass jars and they make great holders for forks, spoons, and knives! I bought some tiny magnets and used them to hold my cookie cutters on the side of the fridge. If you ever get tired of looking at all of those clashy cereal boxes, then I suggest making yourself some cereal bags. I used plain white cloth to make ours in which you can usually find cheerios in it!

The Little One: This is our sons room. He is 5 years old. I painted these jack and the bean stalk vines along the sides of the wall, and one wall is painted all green. This picture means so much, because minutes after I was done taking the photos it appeared as though a hurricane had hit it. LOL! Oh how I only wish his room was always this perfect! Iironically enough, that is not chalkboard paint on the back of his bookshelf…little did I realize that regular flat/dark paint takes chalk quite well! As you can see…he re-purposed an old film canister from our photography days into a jelly bean container!

The Bedroom: This is one of my favorite spots. I wanted a headboard, but did not want to spend that type of money, so I whipped out some semi gloss paint and it turned out great! The hubby was quite skeptical, but loved it after he saw it!

JuBella At Home

My Desk: When I am not snug into the corner of our couch typing and researching on the lap top, you might find me here where I should be sitting! This space is actually a storage closet turned workspace! I can close it off entirely by closing the two folding doors on each side! My favorites are the 3 crane birds I made hanging from the ceiling, my “Fly & Be Inspired” bag I received from lovely & creative Andrea of Fly Girls, my “LOVE” card, and a very inspiring letter printout from a fabulous fellow mommy blogger by the name of Que Jimenez!

Mission Organize

Hi everybody. I just wanted to pop in to let you all know that I am still here. I decided to take this week off to catch up on some serious organizing and scheduling. With so many things on my wish list of things to do, it is a necessity that I have as much order possible around me so that I can achieve them with a clear mind. So I have devoted this week to making our little ablode feel fresh, clean, and pretty as well as to finalize a decent daily schedule for myself, our home, and our little ones homeschooling adventures!

So I will be back here Monday with some lovely posts, a few interviews, and hopefully a post all about organizing. YAY! Okay, I am signing off now and I hope you all have a wonderful week and upcoming weekend. Wish me luck with organizing…it’s a never ending task!
